Caring for Cut Flowers in Seven Easy Steps

Fresh Flower Care Tips

Step One: Always use clean vases or containers. Bacteria in the water will shorten the life span of your flowers. Household bleach is an excellent cleaning agent for your floral containers.

Step Two: When you purchase flowers from FreshFlowers.com.au you will receive flower food to increase the longevity of your beautiful flowers. Have your vase ready before working with the flowers and fill it with about ¾ full of fresh water and floral food (please use as directed).

Step Three: Remove all of the leaves that will be under the water while in the vase. Leaves that are submerged will rot, thus creating bacteria.

Step Four: Each stem should be given a fresh cut, at least 3cm from the stem base, on an angle and ideally while holding the stem under water. Cutting under water prevents air from getting into the stem which could block the flow of water from going all the way up the stem and to the actual flower. You can fill up a sink or a small bowl to do this.

Step Five: Flowers will last longer in cool conditions, away from direct sunlight, heat and draughts.

Step Six: Keep your flowers blooming by recutting the stems and replacing the vase water every second day.

Step Seven: For flower arrangements with a foam base, simply add ¼ cup of fresh water each day.

Most importantly – enjoy the flowers!  They don’t last forever but they do bring you great joy and happiness!
